The primary SMTP address must be specified when referencing a mailbox

This article describes the cause & resolution for the following error when sending emails via Exchange or Office 365 Mail Agents.

SYMPTOMS

Unable to send email via The Layer & Office 365 or Microsoft Exchange due to not using the primary SMTP address to reference the mailboxes.

The following error information will be showing for affected users in the Status Monitor dialog: The primary SMTP address must be specified when referencing a mailbox.

CAUSE

The Layer's EWS agent requires mailboxes to be referenced by their primary SMTP address. If using Office 365, this is usually the login name for the user's account, rather than the 'Send from' email address specified for the account.

RESOLUTION

Update the email address attribute for affected user(s) in The Layer to match the primary SMTP address from Office 365.
